Prof. Susan Trumbore (MPI-BGC Jena) has kindly agreed to hold a keynote talk

The ESS conference is hosted by PhD students affiliated with the Earth System Research Partnership between the three Institutes, MPI for Biogeochemistry in Jena, MPI for Chemistry in Mainz and MPI for Meteorology in Hamburg along with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

The three day conference is open to all national and international PhD- or Master's-level applicants involved in the earth sciences, no matter which tools you use or which scale you work on. We invite you to present your research.

Our main goals are to:

  • Have a broad range of presentations to deepen the exchange between the multitudes of scientific disciplines concerning themselves with earth system sciences.
  • Offer you new perspectives and inspirations for your own projects.
  • Have renowned keynote speakers give insights into current hot topics in their areas.
  • And most importantly to achieve all above in a relaxed informal atmosphere, getting to know each other and having lots of fun.

The conference will take place from the 24th to the 27th of March 2015 at the MPI for Chemistry in Mainz.

Registration begins:01.12.2014
Registration ends:15.02.2015
Conference fee:80€

The conference fee does not apply to MPI for chemistry or IMPRS-ACP members.

The three days will be split into three loosely themed sessions:

Wednesday (25.03.):AtmosphereKeynote: Jonathan Williams
Thursday (26.03.):Energy & ClimateKeynote: Mark Lawrence, Dim Coumou
Friday (27.03.):GeoscienceKeynote: Susan Trumbore

There will be three poster sessions that shall begin with “a minute of madness”. Each participant who has a poster will have exactly one minute time to advertise their topic of research. It is the perfect way to generate interest in your work.

Please be as creative as you can by using, e.g. a slide, a video, a piece of poetry or whatever comes to mind!

Here are a few examples of how it could look like.

We plan to host a panel discussion, with opening words by Nobel laureate Professor Paul Crutzen, where we hope to have an insightful discourse between representatives of science, industry and politics.

  • Title: Building a sustainable society: Do we have to change faster than climate?

Of course, the conference won’t be all work and no play. We will have an ice-breaker on the Tuesday evening before the conference, to get to know each other. On Wednesday evening we will have a pub-quiz, to crown the coveted “ESS General Knowledge Geniuses” and on Thursday there will be a conference dinner after the panel discussion. Furthermore on the afternoon of the final day there will be a laboratory tour of the institute.

We hope to see you in Mainz.
